Homburg an der Unstrut

The Homburg an der Unstrut (also: Hohenburg an der Unstrut ) was a medieval monastery on the Unstrut not far from Langensalza ( Thuringia ). Homburg was a battlefield in Henry IV's Saxon War in 1075 .

location

The monastery was located on the southern high bank of the Unstrutaue about 1 km south of Thamsbrück , a district of Bad Langensalza. At the end of the 19th century, very sparse remains of the monastery could still be seen. Today it (or the castle) is considered lost, that is without any remains.

Battlefield

On June 9, 1075 it came to the battle at Homburg on the Unstrut (also: Battle of the High Castle and Nägelstedt ), in which the royal army of Henry IV. By Herman of Glizberg (from Kunitzburg ) and Bohemian reinforcement under Vratislav II. On the united rebellious Saxon-Thuringian army under Otto von Northeim and Burchard II von Halberstadt was victorious.

In 768, Charlemagne commissioned the construction of the Homburg monastery. He installed the Lords of Driefurt as bailiffs over the monastery. For the year 1073 an assembly of princes in the imperial court ( imperial monastery ) Homburg near Saltza is chronologized.

In 1136 the foundation of the Homburg Benedictine monastery was renewed. Emperor Lothar III. determined the conversion of the nunnery into a monastery. It belonged to the Archdiocese of Mainz and was placed under the protection of Pope Honorius .

In 1196, Bernhard, Duke of Saxony (?) And Heinrich V , Count Palatine near Rhine , granted the Homburg monastery ownership of the Church of St. Stephan in Salza, including patronage and land.

In 1541 the Benedictine monastery of Homburg (Hohenburg) was abolished in the course of the Reformation .
