Hong Kong Cup
The Hong Kong Cup is the most highly endowed horse race in China at 20 million Hong Kong dollars (equivalent to almost 2 million euros) and the largest in Asia after the Dubai World Cup and the Japan Cup .
The event, organized by the Hong Kong Jockey Club , will run on the turf in mid-December and is considered the last major event of the international racing year. Thoroughbreds aged three and over compete for victory in front of 80,000 spectators in the "Hong Kong International Races" series at the Sha Tin racecourse.
The race was founded in 1988, but it has only been one of the big Group I races since the course was extended to 2,000 meters (a middle distance in horse races) in 1999 . It is traditionally sponsored by Cathay Pacific . Star jockey Frankie Dettori has already won three times. In 2011 the German horse Zazou and his rider Olivier Peslier came third.
