Hongshanosaurus is a little-known genus of pelvic dinosaur from the group of Ceratopsia . It is closely related to Psittacosaurus and forms with it the Psittacosauridae .

The holotype of Hongshanosaurus is the skull of a young animal, which is almost completely preserved. In addition, the approximately 20 centimeter long skull of an adult animal is known, which roughly corresponds to the larger representatives of Psittacosaurus . It differs from its well-known relative in that the part of the skull in front of the eye socket makes up half the length of the skull, that the nasal and eye sockets are elliptical and that the lower skull window of the temporal region is directed backwards and downwards ( caudodorsal ). Nothing is known about the rest of the body structure of this dinosaur, possibly it moved like Psittacosaurus mainly on two legs ( biped ). Like all Ceratopsia, it was herbivorous.

The Hongshanosaurus finds come from the Yixian Formation in the Chinese province of Liaoning and were first described in 2003. The genus name alludes to the Neolithic Hongshan culture , type species and the only known species is H. houi . The dating of this formation is controversial. The fossil comes from the Lower Cretaceous , probably from the early Aptian, and is therefore around 126 to 123 million years old.

After a comparison of the skull morphology, Hongshanosaurus was synonymous with Psittacosaurus lujiatunensis in mid-2013 , since the apomorphies of the genus can be explained by the dorsoventral crushing of the skull.
