Honorius von Amiens , sometimes also Honoratus von Amiens (* Port-le-Grand , Ponthieu ; † May 16 , approx. 600 ) is a saint of the Catholic Church and patron saint of bakers . He was the eighth bishop of Amiens . His feast day is May 16.

Life

Honorius was born into a noble family near Amiens . From childhood he is said to have distinguished himself through his virtue. Honorius was trained by his predecessor in the office of Bishop of Amiens, Beatus of Amiens . When Honorius was to be appointed Bishop of Amiens, he initially turned it down because he did not feel worthy of this office. Tradition has it that Honorius was hit on the head by a beam of divine light, which indicated God's approval of the appointment. In addition, holy oil of unknown origin is said to have appeared on his forehead.

Legend has it that when the news of Honorius' appointment as bishop became known in his hometown, his former nanny did not believe that he was actually called to this office. As she was baking bread, she announced that the only way she would believe the news was if the bread pusher she was using took root and turned into a tree. When she set the tool down on the ground, it instantly turned into a blackberry bush that was blooming and bearing fruit. The miraculous shrub was shown to visitors to the place in the 16th century.

During his tenure as bishop Honorius discovered the relics of Saints Victoricus, Fuscian, and Gentian, which had been lost for 300 years.

Worship as a saint

Honorius was venerated all over France after several miracles are said to have occurred during the exhumation of his body in 1060.

His relics were especially worshiped to prevent drought . In one case, Bishop Guy of Amiens is said to have ordered an urn with the remains of Honorius to be carried in procession around the city walls when a drought occurred. Soon afterwards the desired rain should have started.

In 1202 the baker Renaud Cherins signed some land to the city of Paris so that a chapel in honor of Honorius could be built there. This chapel soon became one of the most magnificent in the city. In 1400 the bakers of Paris founded their guild in the church of St. Honorius and from now on celebrated the feast day of St. Honorius on May 16, which contributed to the further spread of his veneration.

In 1659 Louis XIV ordered that every baker should observe the feast of St. Honorius.
