The Hoover-Minthorn House is a historically significant building in Newberg , Oregon .

history

The Hoover-Minthorn House was built in 1881 by Jesse Edwards on his newly acquired farm, making it the oldest building in Newberg. Three years later it was sold to Henry John Minthorn, who had moved to Newberg from West Branch, Iowa with his wife Laura Minthorn in 1882 . He ran a nearby Indian school and soon afterwards the Quaker Friends Pacific Academy, founded in Newberg , at which his wife also taught. In 1884 the Minthorns took in their orphaned nephew Herbert Hoover , who attended Quaker School there from September 1885. In 1889, Minthorn resigned from his post as school principal and moved his family to Salem, Oregon .

In 1955, the Hoover-Minthorn House was based on old construction plans and, according to statements from Herbert Hoover and the former owner Lilian Nicholson, was restored and set up as a historical museum. On December 19, 2003, the Hoover-Minthorn House was added to the National Register of Historic Places .

Building

The two-story house was built with an L-shaped floor plan and a hipped roof . A shed is attached to the southwest corner of Hoover-Minthorn House. The cornice of the upper row of windows is decorated in the style of a frieze with a circumferential band of flat panels. Both the upper and lower windows end with a simple architrave . A veranda is built in front of the entrance door. In terms of design, the Hoover-Minthorn House is most likely to be assigned to the Italianate style and thus corresponds to the architectural style preferred during its construction in Oregon.
