Mode and participants
As in Vancouver 2010 and Sochi 2014 , the 2018 Winter Olympics were held in three groups for men and in two groups of four teams for women. The qualification for the Olympic tournament was based on the IIHF world rankings .
For the men, the first eight places ( Sweden , Finland , Russia , Czech Republic , Canada , United States , Switzerland , and Slovakia ) were automatically qualified, as was the host South Korea . The next ranked teams played three qualifying tournaments in which Norway , Germany and Slovenia qualified.
For the women, the teams from the United States , Canada , Finland , Russia and Sweden qualified directly, as did host South Korea . Then there were Switzerland and Japan , who qualified through the qualifying tournaments. A few weeks before the start of the games, North and South Korea announced that an all-Korean women's team would take part in the tournament.
