Horace Lawson Hunley
Horace Lawson Hunley (born June 20, 1823 in Sumner County , Tennessee , † October 15, 1863 in Charleston , South Carolina ), originally worked as a lawyer in New Orleans . During the American Civil War , he developed a hand-operated submarine for the Confederate Navy, the HL Hunley , with which the blockade ships of the northern states should be fought off the port city of Charleston. He drowned in 1863 during a test drive of his invention, which was later named after him.
