Horace Winchell

Horace Winchell (born January 1, 1915 in Madison , Wisconsin , † July 20, 1993 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American mineralogist .

Horace Winchell was the grandson of geologist Newton Horace Winchell and the son of geologist Alexander Newton Winchell . He studied geology and mineralogy at the University of Wisconsin ( Masters degree in 1936) and at Harvard University , where he received his Masters degree in 1937 and his PhD in Mineralogy and Crystallography in 1941. He wrote his dissertation on the volcanic rocks of Oahu while working for the water supply in Hawaii . From 1941 to 1946 he worked as a crystallographer for a watch company (Hamilton Watch Company in Lancaster , Pennsylvania ).

In 1945 he became an instructor in mineralogy at Yale University , where he stayed for the remainder of his career. In 1951 he became an associate professor and in 1983 a professor. In addition to his professorship, he was curator of minerals at the Peabody Museum of Natural History . In 1985 he retired. He continued some mineralogical works that his grandfather and father had started.

He was an honorary member of the Mineralogical Society of Great Britain and Ireland and a member of the American Association for the Advancement of Science .

Winchell was an Associate Editor of the American Journal of Science from 1951 to 1988 .
