Carochi had a fairly thorough understanding of the Otomí and Nahuatl languages, and he was the first grammarian to take syllable length into account in his Nahuatl spelling and to represent the voiceless glottal plosive with a saltillo . His Arte de la Lengva Mexicana con la declaración de los adverbios della was published by Juan Ruyz in 1645 and gained great importance shortly afterwards. Carochi also wrote a grammar for the Otomí language, which is no longer preserved today.
