The yellow-green angle spanner ( Euphyia frustata ), also called hornwort leaf spanner or chickweed leaf spanner , is a butterfly ( moth ) from the spanner family (Geometridae).

The wingspan of the moth is 28 to 34 millimeters. The basic color of the forewings varies from gray-green to moss green and yellow-green to yellow-brown or yellow-orange. They are provided with numerous wavy transverse lines, which are usually created twice and filled with dark. The middle field stands out lighter and shows an elongated discal spot. The fringing area is darkened and traversed by a lighter wavy line. The hind wings are gray-white in color. Cross lines are mostly indistinct or faded. The hemline is made up of small black dots.

The egg is initially white, later tinted pink and has red spots. It is covered by an almost square network and shows strong depressions on the side. The micropyl rosette has four leaves.

Caterpillar

Adult caterpillars are reddish to brownish on the back and clay-yellow on the sides and show dark, interrupted dorsal and side dorsal lines on the first three segments.

Doll

The stocky doll is reddish brown in color and has dots on the abdomen . The cremaster is conical and characterized by two longer, diverging bristles at the end and several shorter ones on the sides.

Geographical distribution and occurrence

The occurrence of the yellow-green angle spanner stretches from North Africa through the entire Mediterranean area to Asia Minor . In Central Europe it is only found very locally and is absent in Northern Europe and the British Isles . The altitude distribution of the species is between 500 and 2000 meters in the Alps . It prefers rocky dry grasslands , scree slopes and stony valleys.

Way of life

The nocturnal moths usually form a generation that flies from July to September. In contrast, two generations appear in climatically favorable regions, which can be found from the end of April to the end of June and from mid-July to the end of September. During the day the moths prefer to rest under overhanging rocks. At night they like to visit artificial light sources . The caterpillars feed mainly on the leaves of hornwort - ( Cerastium ), chickweed ( Minuartia ), star chickweed ( Stellaria ) and bedstraw species ( Galium ). The species overwinters as a pupa.

Danger

The yellow-green Winkelspanner is listed on the Red List of Endangered Species in Germany as "critically endangered", in Bavaria it is "endangered". In Baden-Wuerttemberg it occurs in large numbers in some places, but the endangerment status has yet to be clarified.
