Horsefly is an unincorporated community (equivalent to a parish-free area ) in the Canadian province of British Columbia .

geography

Horsefly is located in the Cariboo Regional District , about 200 kilometers away between Prince George in the northwest and Kamloops in the southeast. The Horsefly River touches Horsefly in the east, the Horsefly Lake with the Horsefly Lake Provincial Park is at a distance of ten kilometers in a northeast direction.

history

When gold was discovered in the Horsefly River in 1859 , the Cariboo Gold Rush began and many gold prospectors settled in the area. Thaddeus Harper started hydromechanical mining in 1887 and triggered a second wave of gold prospectors. The place was called Harpers's Camp . After the prospect for gold had become unattractive and most of the adventurers moved away, the remaining residents changed the place name to Horsefly in 1920.

The place Horsefly, the Horsefly River, the Horsefly Lake and Horsefly Lake Provincial Park were by the very numerous occurring in the humid areas and the residents constantly haunting, blood-sucking insects, the brakes (Tabanidae) (English: Horsefly ) named.

At the beginning of the 21st century , Horsefly is a popular stopover for tourists who are walking in the footsteps of the historic gold digger mentality, enjoying the natural beauty of the quiet surroundings or watching the sockeye salmon ( Oncorhynchus nerka ) and other salmon species spawn in the Horsefly River . Souvenir shops , small hotels and restaurants provide accommodation and variety.

Demographic data

In 2016 a population of 186 people was determined. These are permanent residents of the place. During the summer months there are also part-time employees in the service area, some steadfast gold prospectors and numerous tourists in motels or on campsites in Horsefly.
