Horst Barth (politician)

Horst Barth (born August 19, 1933 in Torgau ; † November 2, 2018 in Riesa ) was a German teacher and politician ( FDP ). From 1990 to 2001 he was Lord Mayor of Riesa in the Free State of Saxony .

Life

Horst Barth attended high school in Riesa from 1948 (today's Städtisches Gymnasium Riesa - House "Max Planck" I) until 1952. In 1973 he completed his doctorate together with Jürgen Fröhlich at the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Technical University of Dresden with a dissertation on problem solving problems in the spatial allocation in the technological operational planning with special consideration of programmed procedures . He worked as a vocational school teacher. In 1990 he was elected Mayor (later Lord Mayor) of Riesa for the FDP . In the first direct election of the mayor on June 13, 1994, he received 29.56% of all votes and was thus re-elected. He held the office of Lord Mayor until 2001; his successor was Wolfram Köhler .

On the occasion of the Day of Saxony in 1999, he assessed the situation for his hometown Riesa as follows: “After German reunification, the consequence for Riesa was to liquidate the monostructured steel site, to relocate new industry to this site and to relocate the other companies in the city receive. It was thus possible to keep Riesa as an industrial location, and this project has become a model. "

At the age of 68 he retired as a local politician. During his time as Lord Mayor, Horst Barth played a decisive role in the restructuring of the Riesa steelworks and the establishment of the city as a sports and event location with a corresponding change in the cityscape.

Honors

On the occasion of Riesa's 888th anniversary in 2006, Horst Barth was honored with the "Riesa Giant" for his life's work. The award was presented by his successor Wolfram Köhler .
