Horst Czichos (born August 13, 1937 in Opole ) is a German engineer , physicist and university professor. From 1992 to 2002 he was President of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).

Life

After secondary school in Berlin, Czichos completed an apprenticeship as a toolmaker . From 1957 he then studied precision engineering at the Gauß engineering school, which later became the Beuth University of Applied Sciences in Berlin . At the same time he attended evening grammar school, which he graduated from in 1960 with the final exam. The following year he passed the engineering exam. He then worked as a freelance engineer in the optical industry and completed a degree in physics at the Free University of Berlin , from which he graduated in 1966.

In 1966 he became a research associate at BAM. In addition to his doctorate, he took on a teaching position at the University of Technology in Berlin. After two years, he received a doctorate in engineering from the Technical University of Berlin for his work on the subject of "On the connection between adhesion and electronic structure of metals under rolling friction in the elastic range" . From 1969 he headed the “Tribometry and Tribophysics” laboratory at BAM. In 1974 he became an honorary professor at the University of Technology in Berlin. In 1978 he became head of the “Special Areas of Materials Testing” department of BAM, in 1985 Vice President of BAM and in 1992 its President.

After his retirement in 2002, Czichos built up the mechatronics department at the Berlin University of Applied Sciences .

Scientific work

In the field of tribology , Czichos researched the friction and wear behavior of metallic, ceramic and polymer materials. He introduced systems analysis to tribology. His book “Tribology - a systems approach to the science and technology of friction, lubrication and wear”, published in 1978, was translated into Japanese, Russian and Chinese and recognized by colleagues around the world. In 1992 Czichos published with K.-H. Habig the “Tribology Handbook”, the 3rd edition of which appeared in 2010.

In 1988, together with J. Lexow, on behalf of the United Nations, he presented the technical field "Materials Technology and Development" in the UN Bulletin of the Advance Technology Alert System (ATAS). In 1991, together with R. Helms and J. Lexow, he published the research report " Industrial and Materials Technologies: Research and Development Trends and Needs - A Study for the Commission of the European Communities ".

In his book “What is wrong with the wrong Rembrandt and how hard is Damascus steel ?” Czichos explored the question of how art can be researched, tested and preserved using technology.
