Horst Gärtner (full name Hermann Oskar Horst Gärtner; born May 15, 1911 in Lichtentanne , † October 29, 2001 in Kiel ) was a German microbiologist and hygienist.

Life

As the son of a senior works engineer in mining , Gärtner studied medicine from 1930 at the Georg-August University in Göttingen , the Philipps University in Marburg , the Westphalian Wilhelms University and the Friedrich Wilhelms University in Berlin . Most recently back in Münster, he was promoted to Dr. med. PhD . During his service with the Wehrmacht , Gärtner managed a hygienic field laboratory from 1940 to 1945. In 1941 he completed his habilitation in Münster. In 1942 he was appointed associate professor in Münster .

In 1951 Gärtner was appointed full professor at Saarland University.

In 1957 he moved to Kiel as full professor and head of the Medical Investigation Office. Until 1980 he was professor for microbiology and hygiene including social hygiene and health care and director of the Hygiene Institute at Kiel University. After his retirement in 1979, he divided “his” institute into three new ones: hygiene and environmental medicine, medical microbiology and virology, and immunology.

A widower since the early 1980s, Gärtner had to leave his house on the Niemannsweg in Kiel because of health problems and move to a retirement home in the center of Kiel. He was the victim of a robbery in his home. He tried to overcome the considerable physical and mental injuries. He had a festive occasion to celebrate his 90th birthday. He died two months later. He left a son and two daughters.

In scientific terms, Gärtner dealt primarily with silicosis , the epidemiology of various infectious diseases , vaccinations , water and sewage hygiene and social hygiene issues.

In 1960/61, Gärtner was dean of the medical faculty at Christian Albrechts University . Very committed to academic self-government, until 1979 he was the first chairman of the newly created administrative board of Kiel University Clinic, whose modern restructuring he played a major role.

Corps student

As the son of a Weinheim Corps student , Gärtner became active in Corps Guestphalia Berlin in November 1932 (with Horst Lahr ) . As an excellent expert on German higher education, student heraldry , corps student customs and antiquities, he was the archivist of his corps from 1966 to 1982. He rebuilt the corps archive destroyed in 1943, was co-editor and editor of Guestphalia's corps history and wrote the short biographies of many corps brothers. Because of his outstanding and diverse services, Guestphalia awarded him honorary membership in 1980.

He frequented his befriended Corps Holsatia . He taught the offspring in student history , supervised doctoral students and gave many Holsteiners quarters. Out of respect and gratitude, Holsatia awarded him the corps ribbon in 1963 and the ribbon two years later .
