Horst J. Beck (born June 14, 1909 in Munich ; † February 7, 2006 in Überlingen ) was a German painter .

Life

The son of the glass painter Jakob Beck and his wife Karolina Valerie geb. Scheel experienced artistic influence in his school education. In Dresden he received drawing lessons from Professor Georg Wrba . With the onset of National Socialism, Beck saw no more opportunities for free further education and studied textile engineering in Mönchengladbach from 1934 and trained as a colorist . After serving in the military and war as a long-range reconnaissance pilot in 1937–1945, with the help of the Guardian of the Franciscan Convent in Dongo, he managed to escape to Switzerland and was admitted to the Bernese painter Martin Lauterburg . Beck could start painting again there.

Between 1949 and 1958 Beck visited Paris several times for several months, where he met Hans Hartung and the painters of the École de Paris . In 1952 he settled on Lake Constance . Here he developed further with seminars on painting and music with Max Ackermann and Wolfgang Fortner , and on painting and architecture with Hugo Häring . There was also a lively exchange of ideas with Julius Heinrich Bissier (born December 3, 1893 in Freiburg im Breisgau; † June 18, 1965 in Ascona), as evidenced by the extensive correspondence between the painters in Horst Beck's estate.

At the end of the 1950s, Beck began designing stained glass and church windows. Beck worked very intensively in this area until the early 1970s and today over 20 churches of both denominations in Baden-Württemberg have works by Horst J. Beck.

In 1959 Beck married Christa Lotz from Obernhof / Lahn. With her he made trips to the eastern Mediterranean to Greece, Turkey or Israel. These were the regions he had previously flown over as a reconnaissance plane. They set the trend for his later paintings. Beck says of himself: "The only ism that I claim for myself is individualism."
