Horst nightingale

Horst Nachtigall (* 1924 in Berge (Nauen) ; † June 18, 2013 in Mainz ) was a German ethnologist.

Life

After 1945 he studied anthropology, African languages, early and prehistory and archeology at the University of Mainz . His teachers included Adolf Ellegard Jensen , Adolf Friedrich , Eugen Ludwig Rapp and Roland Hampe . He graduated in 1950. Due to his interest in museum work, he also completed training at the Museum für Völkerkunde Frankfurt , where Hermann Niggemeyer was his teacher.

In 1952 he became director of the archeology department at the Instituto Colombiano de Anthropologia in Bogota. During his stay in Colombia, Nachtigall also set up a photo library for the National Museum's Archaeological Collection.

In 1957 Nachtigall finished his habilitation thesis on ancient American megalithic cultures. Finally, he carried out several field studies: not only among nomads in Tunisia between 1960 and 1965, but also in Peru and Bolivia. In addition, Nachtigall held a professorship at the University of Buenos Aires in 1961/62 . From 1963 to 1989 he taught as a professor of ethnology at the Philipps University of Marburg . In addition to his teaching activities, Nachtigall also took care of the ethnological collection of Marburg.

His main interests included the anthropology of religion and the study of shamanism, as well as the archeology of American megalithic cultures. In addition, his scientific work deals with questions of acculturation and uses the method of empirical fieldwork.
