Horst Oppel

Horst Oppel (born June 30, 1913 in Halle (Saale) , † July 17, 1982 in Marburg ) was a German Anglicist .

life and work

Oppel received his doctorate in German studies on November 12, 1935 in Bonn with a thesis on comedy and humor in the creative structure of Friedrich Hebbel (Erfurt 1935). He then published The Literary Studies in the Present: Methodology and Science Theory (Stuttgart 1939, Ann Arbor 1980) and Studies on the Perception of the Nordic in Goethe's Time (Halle as 1944). In 1946 he was appointed to the English professorship at the newly founded University of Mainz , from where he moved to the University of Marburg in 1956 . From 1963 he belonged to the Mainz Academy of Sciencesin whose humanities and social science class he published numerous essays, most recently “Those Pelican Daughters” (King Lear III, 4): Wanderings and Changes of a Symbol (1979, No. 13). In 1979 he suffered a stroke from which he was unable to recover.

His students include Heinz Kosok, Paul Goetsch , Horst W. Drescher , Rudolf Böhm, Horst Prießnitz, Annegret Maak, Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel , Gertrud Jungblut and, from Romance studies, Hans Helmut Christmann . The Shakespeare archive of the Mainz Academy forms his estate. The Shakespeare picture archive Oppel - Hammerschmidt of the University of Mainz goes back to a foundation by Horst Oppel in 1946 and was built up by Hildegard Hammerschmidt-Hummel.
