Scheffler's works, a form of elementary states of order, constantly change from the rational to irrational pictorial representations. This immanent alternating dynamics of conscious color, surface and space experiences shows the viewer the multi-polar tensions of picture elements that characterize his entire work. Contrary to the concrete art of Bill and Lohse, for which a picture must be completely resolvable, Scheffler writes: I need pictures for the area that is not always rationally comprehensible, as in life, which is often determined by many variables.

Geometry is the study of how events can be constructed , according to Scheffler in an aphorism in the exhibition catalog of his retrospective in 1986. With this sentence he hits the core of his paintings and drawings. Its proximity to mathematical and geometrical thinking as a design principle opens up a canon of diverse constructivist image ideas from optical-logical and objective-logical image vocabulary.

Principles dealt with for 60 years: number-oriented divisions and combinatorics / modular painting and objects / serial cubic and angular themes / programmed grids with flexible elements / wall designs in public buildings
