Horst Strohbusch (born December 17, 1927 in Meiningen ) is a German ophthalmologist and local politician ( free voters ). He was an initiator of the turning movement in Meiningen and the first democratically elected mayor of the city of Meiningen after the political change in 1989/90.

Life

Horst Strohbusch was born in Meiningen in 1927 and attended the Bernhardinum high school . Without a school leaving certificate, he had to work as an anti-aircraft helper in the Wehrmacht at the age of 16 and was taken prisoner. In 1945 he returned home and got the Abitur . He then studied medicine at the University of Jena . From 1958 to 1990 Horst Strohbusch was chief physician in the eye department at the Meiningen Polyclinic and one of only two ophthalmologists operating in the Suhl district . This saved him from being a member of the SED , but not being monitored by the State Security . He was classified as "politically unreliable".

During the fall of 1989/90, Strohbusch made speeches at the weekly prayers for peace in the Meiningen town church , in which he pointed out grievances in the GDR and called for changes. The Meiningen turning movement was mainly organized and carried out by the Evangelical Church . Strohbusch joined the Democratic Awakening Party (DA) at the end of 1989 . Horst Strohbusch was elected Mayor of Meiningen in May 1990 in the presence of Lord Mayor Peter Biebl of the twin town of Neu-Ulm . He held this office until 1992 and then sat for the free voters in the Meiningen district council . During this time of difficult upheaval in the new federal states, as mayor, he was able to bring important future projects to the city on the way with the "Dreizigeracker industrial area", the financial security of the Meiningen theater and the new construction of the Meiningen Clinic . In 1999 he published the book "The light came from the church", in which he documents in detail the events of the time of change in Meiningen (new edition 2009). Horst Strohbusch is married and has a daughter and a son.
