The Helios Klinikum Meiningen is an acute care hospital of specialized care, based in Meiningen and an academic teaching hospital of the University of Jena with supra-regional service obligations.
The clinic has been part of the Helios Kliniken Group, a division of the Fresenius healthcare group, since 2014 . Together with the medical facilities in the immediate vicinity of the clinic such as medical centers, dementia and dialysis center and medical care center (MVZ), the second largest hospital in southern Thuringia with its 20 specialist and occupational departments, day clinic and 12 medical centers forms the complex Meiningen health center for southern Thuringia and northern Lower Franconia .
history
After a construction period of 27 months, the Helios Klinikum Meiningen was opened on April 1st 1995 in the western part of the city in the district of Drei 30acker as a 100% subsidiary of Rhön-Klinikum AG in Bad Neustadt an der Saale under the name “Klinikum Meiningen GmbH” . It is the successor to the "District Hospital Meiningen", which was founded in 1832 as the " Georgen Hospital", first the city hospital and later the state hospital of Saxony-Meiningen , and existed until 1995.
As a prototype of a modern care hospital, the clinic is the first mixed-financed and privately run acute care hospital in Germany and was the first new hospital to be built in the Free State of Thuringia after the political change in 1990. The construction costs amounted to around 193 million DM (around 100 million euros).
The standard of medical treatment and the quality of care have been continuously increased since the opening. In 2005 the clinic underwent a comprehensive renovation including new furniture. In August 2006 the day-care center and the medical care center Meiningen (MVZ) were handed over in an extension. In January 2009 another new building was added with a total usable area of 2,576 m². It houses the new clinic for “Pain and Palliative Medicine”, the “Orthopedics” and “Neurosurgery” clinics as well as a “Radiation Therapy Practice”. The individual specialist departments of the clinic were modernized and redesigned in the years 2012 to 2014 according to the latest findings.
In the 2000s, the hospital developed into an important cancer treatment facility with the Breast Center and the Colon Cancer and Prostate Cancer Centers . In 2009 a trauma center was added and a radiation therapy practice as a tenant. The stroke unit is of national importance with care level 1. In 2014 the orthopedic clinic received the certificate for an endoprosthetics center for maximum care.
In 2013, Rhön-Klinikum AG sold the Meiningen hospital to the Fresenius health care group . The transaction was completed on February 28, 2014 and the clinic was integrated into the Helios Kliniken Group, which belongs to Fresenius, and the name of the clinic was changed to "Helios Klinikum Meiningen". In 2019, Helios Privatkliniken GmbH opened a private clinic with six beds in the Helios Klinikum Meiningen. As of April 2020, 529,000 inpatients and 13,155 babies were born in the 25 years of the hospital's existence.
