Visceral surgery

The visceral surgery (from Latin. Viscera = "guts") is the " surgery of the abdominal cavity and the abdominal wall of the endocrine glands and soft tissues including transplantation". As it includes abdominal surgery ( abdominal surgery ), surgical treatment of abdominal - organs , d. H. the entire digestive tract including the esophagus , stomach , small and large intestines , rectum , liver , gallbladder , pancreas and spleen . Surgical treatment of the thyroid and parathyroid glands as well as the treatment of hernias and the transplantation of abdominal cavity organs such as the liver , kidneys , pancreas and small intestine are also part of the visceral surgery. Visceral surgical diseases include acute injuries, tumors , inflammation and malformations of the organs mentioned.

In the 21st century, minimally invasive surgery, and in particular laparoscopic surgery , gained acceptance in more and more areas of visceral surgery . In some regions of Germany there is a distinction between specialist training in general surgery and visceral surgery . The joint medical society is the German Society for General and Visceral Surgery .

Theodor Billroth , who founded gastrointestinal surgery in 1881 with the first gastric resection, is one of the pioneers of visceral surgery . Seven years earlier, the famous London surgeon John Erichsen wrote: "The bowels will remain closed forever to the clever and humane surgeon".
