history

The winter garden

The founder of the hotel, the German immigrant Adolph Wilhelm Krasnapolsky (1834–1912) from Peine in what is now Lower Saxony , bought the coffee house building at that time in 1865 and initially made it a popular restaurant. In the years 1879/1880 he also acquired the adjacent buildings in which he furnished the first hotel rooms.

On the occasion of the “International Colonial Exhibition” in Amsterdam in 1883, Krasnapolsky expanded his company into a grand hotel with 125 rooms in the Belle Époque style . In the late 19th century it was the only hotel in Amsterdam with hot running water and telephones in every room.

For the first time in the Hotel Krasnapolsky, the toilet areas of the common rooms were separated into toilets for men and women.

The passionate grower of exotic plants had the house equipped with an elegant winter garden with a glass roof and Edison lamps . At that time, the use of glass and wrought iron as building materials and electric lighting was still unique.

After the death of his only son, Krasnapolsky retired from the business in 1909.

In 1998 the company was acquired by the Dutch hotel chain Golden Tulip Hospitality Group . Today the NH Amsterdam Grand Hotel Krasnapolsky is the largest five-star conference hotel in the Benelux and has been part of the NH Hotel Group , based in Madrid , Spain , since 2000 .

Cultural monument

In 2001 the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science ( Ministerie van Onderwijs, Cultuur en Wetenschap ) declared the hotel complex a cultural monument ( Rijksmonument ). In addition to the hotel building, the winter garden and the hall of the former hotel's own power station were classified as a particularly protected monument.
