history

Hotel Krone around 1850

It was first mentioned in a document in 1474 in the diary of a Saxon pilgrim who stopped in Solothurn on the way to southern France. At that time, however, the house of the nobleman Diethmar von Halt stood at the place of today's crown. The first known owner, Bernhard Marschalk, sold the hostel to the Kissling family, who remained the owners until the middle of the 16th century. In 1669 Viktor Münch built a new building, which the rifle captain Franz Josef Schmid had 20 years later replaced by the current building. In the council manuals of the city of Solothurn, the approval of enormous amounts of timber for the extension of the "logements" is mentioned. The architect and builder was Paolo Antonio Pisoni from Ascona, who later also completed the St. Ursus Cathedral according to the plans of his uncle Gaetano Matteo Pisoni .

In 1804 the house was sold for 85,000 francs to Franz Jakob Brunner, who ran various inns in the valley with his family. From 1872 to 1908 the house was owned by the Huber-Müller family, who sold it to Fritz and Maria Nussbaumer in 1909. At the end of the 1930s the house had to be renovated again. It was placed under cantonal protection in 1939 and sold to some Solothurn industrialists in 1942, who converted the hotel into a stock corporation in order to preserve it for the city. The hotel was remodeled from 1943 to 1944 and reopened on May 6, 1944. In addition to various interior renovations in the course of the 1970s, the building envelope was also renovated with the help of the federal government and the canton.

In 1995 Von Roll Eisenwerke decided to sell the house and sold it to Marie-Thérèse and Gerry Dörfler, who in turn sold it to the city and canton of Solothurn in 2012 for 9 million francs. The investor and building rights holder was Credit Suisse Funds AG. The four-star boutique hotel reopened on May 2, 2017 after extensive renovations. In autumn 2017 all modernizations and extensions, such as a parking garage in Seilergasse and nine additional studio rooms in the annex building, were completed. In August 2017 the hotel joined the Swiss Historic Hotels association , and the restaurant was awarded 13 Gault Millau points.

Guests

One of the most prominent guests at the Hotel Krone was Napoleon Bonaparte , who traveled through Solothurn in 1797 and was registered with the Krone. Napoleon was annoyed by the cool reception from the Bern government and a broken wheel in Fraubrunnen and was afraid of an assassination attempt. So he only took a glass of water in the crown, paid with a gold coin and then immediately traveled on. The bill for the elaborate preparations, replacement and catering for the horses is still hanging in the foyer of the Krone today. It totaled 2,582 Louis d'or and was never paid by the French state.

In its history, other prominent guests stayed at the hotel, including:

Georges von Sury d'Aspremont , who was in command of the Pontifical Swiss Guard in Rome from 1935 to 1942 , stayed permanently in the crown and celebrated his 100th birthday there.
