Hottentotta jayakari is a scorpion species from the family of Buthidae . This scorpion is common in the Arabian Peninsula with two subspecies.

features

With a total length of up to 90 mm, H. jayakari is one of the large species of the genus Hottentotta . In the nominate form , the prosoma and its keels are brownish. The mesosoma is reddish brown, only the last tergite of the mesosoma is lighter brownish yellow. The Mesosomakiele are also brownish. The first two tergites of the tail ( metasoma ) are brownish yellow, the tergites 3 to 5 are dark brown-black. The poison bladder and the base of the poison sting are reddish brown, the tip of the sting is black-brown. The pedipalps, densely covered with setae , are red-brown, the patella of the pedipalps and the scissor hands (chela mani) blackish brown. The latter are a little brighter in some places. The cutting edge of the movable finger has 14 to 15 rows of teeth. The pectene has 32–35 teeth in the female and 37–42 teeth in the male.

Distribution, habitat and way of life

The distribution area includes the Arabian Peninsula . H. jayakari inhabits arid habitats such as semi-deserts and deserts and stays in sand, earth or under stones during the day. The species is considered to be aggressive and is not harmless to humans.

Systematics

Two subspecies are recognized:

  • Hottentotta jayakari jayakari ( Pocock , 1895) - Arabian Peninsula. The nominate form is described above.
  • Hottentotta jayakari salei ( Vachon , 1980) - southeast of the Arabian Peninsula ( United Arab Emirates , Yemen , Oman ). Similar to the nominate form, but only the metasomater gites 4 and 5 are dark brown-black, the poisonous bladder and poisonous sting are also monochrome brown-black. The pedipalp patella is yellowish, only the pedipalp hand is brown, the scissor fingers are reddish brown. The Pecten has the female only 32-34 teeth.
