For the East African country of Djibouti, his participation in a medium-distance run in the T46 category (for "upper arm amputees, forearm loss and equals") was the premiere and at the same time the country's last participation in the Paralympic Games. As the only athlete in the country, he was also allowed to carry the flag.

At the start, Houssein Omar Hassan injured his ankle. Because of the pain, Hassan could only finish his run at a jogging pace. He was accompanied by standing ovations from the audience. His time was 11 minutes and 13.5 seconds, the first placed Samir Nouioua crossed the finish line with 3 minutes 57.27 seconds.

Houssein later told Omar Hassan that he initially wanted to give up but the cheers in the stadium spurred him to end his run.
