Burial place
There are 17 registered burial mounds on Hove, which date from the 9th century of the south-west Norwegian Viking Empire , to which Hove belonged. The name suggests an ancient pagan cult site (or temple).
Agriculture
Hove has self-draining soil, which is why it has always been a favorable place for farming . Originally Hove belonged to Hove Manor, which was the most important farm on Tromøy. The first known mention of potato cultivation in Norway can be found in the farm diary of the Hove estate. Nils Aaholm wrote here on May 31, 1757 that the potatoes are germinating. In 1773, 5,015 potatoes were planted. In the 19th century, the estate was able to develop modern agriculture in cooperation with other farms on Hovekilen. The goods were transported to Arendal by sea.
Excursion destination, beach and campsite
On the northern side of Hovekilen there is a long, flat sandy beach, which was a popular beach for families in the 19th century. In the summer season it is possible to take boat trips here. There is a campsite right on the beach.
Second World War
The Hove camp was created by the German occupying forces during World War II . On Hove there were three radars , a communication bunker of the R618 type, an anti-aircraft artillery school (Nord 50) from 1941 to 1944 with probably four 88 mm anti-aircraft guns .
Hove camp
After the Second World War, the camp was used by the Norwegian defense until 1962.
In the mid-1960s, a tent camp of the Berlin Socialist Youth of Germany - Die Falken, with up to 2,000 participants took place there. The farmers in the area had to be compensated for the "wild harvest" of their carrots. The Lagerband and the Berlin band The Lords played in the port of Arendal .
In the 1970s, some of the annual summer camps of the AKP , the Communist Workers' Party, were held on Hove. The government used it as a home for asylum seekers for many years until 2006.
In 2006 the Drifts- og Utviklingsselskap took over the area. This is a development company that is 100% owned by Arendal Municipality. She developed culture and tourism concepts. The Hove Festival has been taking place on Hove since 2007. This is the biggest music festival of the year.
The area is also a popular local recreation area for hikers and recreational athletes. In 2003 the association "Hoves Venner" (Hove Friends) was founded. This helps to preserve the area.
Large parts of the TV series 71 ° North were filmed on Hove over several years.
