Hover! [ Hɒvə ] ( Engl. "Float") is a computer game , the CD-ROM installation of the operating system on the Microsoft Windows 95 is included. It's a mix of floating bumper cars and capture the flag . The game was supposed to demonstrate the capabilities of the PCs of the time in the multimedia sector. Hover! is still offered as a free download and runs on all operating systems that are compatible with Windows 95, up to Windows 10 . Furthermore, the game can also be run with WINE on Unix-like systems .

content

In hover! you sit in a floating vehicle with which you glide through the freely navigable, three-dimensional game world and search it for blue flags. At the same time, several drones of the computer-controlled opponent hover around in search of red flags. If you have collected your flags faster than the opponent, you move up to the next level , which takes place in another game world. During the game you collect points and at the end of the game you can add yourself to a list of the best. The higher the level, the more flags you have to collect (between three and six) and the more enemy drones there are in the game world.

As with bumper cars, the vehicles are surrounded by a kind of rubber ring so that they ricochet off when they collide with walls or other vehicles. In the game world there are various objects that can bring the player advantages or disadvantages when collecting or floating over them (see below). At the top and bottom of the game's window there is a kind of dashboard that provides the player with information about the flags and objects collected, the score, a rear-view mirror and a map. The card is revealed the more you have explored the game world. It shows flags as flashing dots, vehicles as triangles and walls as lines.

There are a total of three game worlds that repeat themselves as the level rises: a medieval castle, a futuristic city and a sewer system. The game worlds differ in structure, background music, wall textures and spawn points of the flags.

Objects

Floating objects

Floating objects are collected when you touch them. Some are activated immediately, others can be collected and used as needed.

  • Cloak : makes you invisible to enemy drones for a few seconds.
  • Wall : puts a small wall directly behind your vehicle.
  • Jump : makes it possible to jump on platforms, over walls, opponents or danger spots.
  • Green traffic light: the top speed of the vehicle is increased for a few seconds.
  • Red light: the top speed of the vehicle is reduced for a few seconds.
  • Map Eraser: The map in the dashboard is returned to its original empty state.
  • Shield: temporarily protects you from all negative objects.

Ground fields

Some plates in the floor are also activated when driving over them. They always have a negative effect:

  • Red fields prevent the vehicle from continuing for a few seconds.
  • Green fields with arrows allow the vehicle to drive in the direction of the arrow and block the steering for a few seconds.
  • Green fields with a flag steal one of the flags already captured when driving over them.

Easter Egg

The original game from Hover! has an Easter Egg : If you hold down the Ctrl and Shift keys on the “Press F2 to start a game of Hover!” screen and enter “IBMAB” (the code name of Hover! was Bambi ), you can get into your vehicle look around a small room with 18 portraits of the developers on the walls.

Re-release by Microsoft

In October 2013, Microsoft worked with an independent developer to bring an online version of Hover! that can also be operated on devices with a touchscreen . The graphics were revised and a multiplayer mode for up to eight players was added, but the gameplay remains the same. This version of Hover! Is also available for download from the Windows Phone Store .

If you type in the word Bambi on the start screen of this version , the original version of the game opens on a Windows 95 desktop in the browser.
