Hovsør

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hovsør is a hamlet in Denmark . Today it belongs to the municipality of Østerild . It is located on Thy , nine kilometers northeast of Thisted , between Thisted Bredning and Lønnerup Fjord in Jutland, Denmark . The next big city is Aalborg , about 80 km away.

The port of Hovsør was important for shipping in the Limfjord until the 16th century . Today the access to Østerild Fjord is bridged by the Hovsørvej, a road embankment.

The uprising of 1524 is known when the citizens of Hovsør fought against those of Thisted for city privileges . The people of Hovsør were friends with the landowner on Lyngholm in Svankjær. Since he supported Hovsør in the fight with petitions to the Danish King Frederick I , the residents of Thisted burned his court in the course of the uprising. Thisted triumphed, and disputes over city privileges were resolved in 1536 when Thisted came under the king's crown.

Hovsør became more and more deserted, but remained the quay until 1841 when Thisted's new harbor was ready. Today Hovsør has a unique landscape with a rich bird life.
