Lists on the subject

The Howa Type 89 is a Japanese assault rifle used by the ground self-defense forces , the navy and special forces of Japan. Due to strict export regulations, it is not used by other countries. It replaced the JGSDF's Howa Type 64 rifles.

history

When the Americans replaced the M14 with the M16 in the Vietnam conflict , NATO's 5.56 × 45 mm caliber became NATO's new standard ammunition. So Japan started developing a new assault rifle to replace the old 7.62 × 51 mm NATO rifles .

The company Hōwa Kōgyō was commissioned because they already had the license to produce AR-18 rifles. The knowledge gained in this way was incorporated into the development. After the prototypes HR-11, HR-13, HR-15 and HR-16 (HR1604), the end product was named Type 89, after the year of introduction 1989.

technology

Like all modern assault rifles, the Type 89 is a gas pressure loader with a rotating head lock, the mechanism corresponds to that of the AR-18 . The weapon has a fixed shoulder rest that contains a small storage space. The version Type 89-F (formerly Type 89 Para) has a foldable shoulder rest and is used by vehicle crews and parachutists. The associated rod magazine contains 30 rounds, M16 magazines can also be used, but then the slide catch does not work. A separate bayonet was also developed for the weapon, the M-9 can also be used. The M203 grenade launcher can be attached using an adapter. The fire selector lever is only on the right side of the assault rifle.

Pop Culture

The Howa Type 89 appears in the video game "Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Siege" as the primary weapon of the operator Hibana.
