Howard Hayes Scullard

Howard Hayes Scullard (born February 9, 1903 in Bedford , † March 31, 1983 in London ) was a British ancient historian .

The son of Professor of Church History Herbert Hayes Scullard attended Highgate School from 1916 to 1922 . He then studied from 1922 to 1926 at St John's College at Cambridge University . From 1926 to 1935 he taught as a tutor at Hackney and New College . In 1929 he received his doctorate with the work Scipio Africanus in the Second Punic War . He was then a reader in Ancient History at King's College , London.

In 1935 he published the work A History of the Roman World from 753 to 146 BC The work summarized the latest historical, archaeological and philological findings. It discusses the economic and social problems of early Rome and Italy and provides an overview of developments in Roman law, literature and art during this period. In 1949 The Oxford Classical Dictionary appeared , in which he acted as editor and was responsible for Roman history and wrote about 70 contributions. In the revised edition, which appeared two decades later, he wrote 150 articles. From 1935 to 1950 he mainly dealt with the families of the Roman nobility . In addition, the work Roman Politics 220–150 BC appeared in 1951 , which describes the political careers of aristocratic families in the 2nd and 3rd centuries BC. Examined.
