Hoya jianfenglingensis is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya jianfenglingensis is an epiphytic , climbing plant with up to 8 m long shoots. The stiff shoots are branched and hairy downy. The opposite, rarely alternating leaves are stalked, the petioles are 2 to 3 cm long. The leaf blades are obovate or elliptical, 11 to 14 cm long and 5 to 7 cm wide. The thick paper-like leaves become leathery as they dry. The base is round or wedge-shaped, the apex is pointed. They are downy hairy on the top and bottom. The leaf nerve is clearly visible. It consists of 6 to 10 pairs of secondary ribs starting from the midrib.

The umbel-shaped inflorescence arises from the leaf axils, the top is hemispherical. The inflorescence stalks are hairy and up to 4 cm long. The flower stalks are purple to slightly brownish with spots, and 2 to 4 cm long. The white corolla has a diameter of 1.3 to 1.5 cm. The broad triangular corolla lobes are fused at the base, the tips of the lobes are bent back. They are densely covered with white hair on the inside. The star-shaped spreading red corolla lobes are fleshy with glands at the base. They alternate with the petal tips. The outer extension is pointed, the inner extension is also pointed. The underside is runny, roughly from the middle to the apex. The ovary is bald and measures approximately 2.3 × 3.2 mm in diameter. The club-shaped Pollinia are sloping obliquely inward at the apex, approx. 600 µm long and max. 210 µm wide. They have a thin, translucent, outer edge. The caudiculae are short and thin, approx. 90 µm long and 30 µm thick. The corpusculum is 250 µm long and 100 µm wide and has a strong constriction in the middle. The stylus head has a diameter of 1.8 to 2 mm.

Similar species

Hoya jianfenglingensis is most similar to Hoya fungii Merr. and Hoya carnosa (L. f.) R.Br. All three types have elliptical leaves and pointed corolla lobes. Hoya jianfenglingensis differs, however, in the indument on the vegetative parts, the smaller secondary crown and the presence of glands at the base of the secondary crown.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species is only known from the type locality in Hainan , China. There it grows epiphytically on trees or lithophytically on rocks in shady and moist habitats in a tropical mountain rainforest at an altitude of 1040 m above sea level.
