Hoya mega laster is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya megalaster is an epiphytic , twisting, climbing plant with densely leafed shoots. The shoots have a diameter of 2 to 3 mm and are largely glabrous or have sparse, very small, somewhat raised lenticels . The shoots are somewhat thickened under the leaf bases. The spread, opposite leaves are petiolate, the waxy, frosted stems are 2 cm long and 2 to 3 mm thick. The leathery leaf blades are broadly ovate, 8 to 14 cm long and a little below the middle 5 to 9 cm wide. The largest leaves were 20 cm long and 8.5 cm wide. The base is rounded to slightly heart-shaped, the apex is drawn out pointed. The top and bottom are bare. There are glands at the base. The leaf nerve consists of the midrib; from this go from 3 to 4 indistinct secondary ribs on each side.

The umbel-shaped, pendent inflorescence consists of 8 to 12 flowers, the top is flat. The inflorescence stalks are 6 cm long, 2 mm thick and arise from the leaf axils. They are bare, in the lower part there are lenticels. The flower stalks are about 5 cm long, 0.75 mm thick and glabrous. The sepals are broadly ovate, about 1 mm long and glabrous. The corolla has a diameter of 2.5 to 3 cm. The inside and outside are bare except for an area in the center that is downy hairy. The petals are red on the inside, a little lighter on the outside. The petals are fused together in the basal half. The broad, triangular corolla lobes are 0.8 cm long and curved upwards, the apices are pointed short. This gives the corolla a flat, bell-shaped or cup-shaped habit. The secondary crown is dark red, the apices are somewhat lighter. The corolla lobes are spread almost horizontally; they are about 6 mm long and 3 mm wide. The underside has a longitudinal groove. The inner process is pointed and ascending, the outer process is pointed, but not very ascending. The attachments of the dust bags are rounded.

Similar species

The species is closely related to Hoya archboldiana , Hoya lauterbachii , Hoya macgillivrayi and Hoya onychoides , all of which have very large, more or less cup-shaped to bell-shaped flowers. The corolla lobes are relatively narrow.

The flowers of Hoya macgillivrayi and Hoya lauterbachii are almost twice as large. The flower of Hoya lauterbachii is also much more bell-shaped with shorter petal tips. The corolla of Hoya archboldiana is even more bell-shaped ; this species also has much larger leaves. Hoya onychoides has very characteristic claw-shaped petal tips.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs in Papua New Guinea on the upper reaches of the Augusta River in Kaiser Wilhelms-Land .

Taxonomy

The taxon was described by Otto Warburg in 1907 . The whereabouts of the holotype is not known ( Hollrung no. 258 ). The taxon is accepted as a valid taxon by the Plants of the World online database . However, like Plants of World, IPNI lists the taxon online with the authorship Warb. ex K.Schum. & Lauterb. (1900). In this work, however, the taxon is a nomen nudum, as no description was given.
