Hoya odorata is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya odorata is a terrestrial, shrub-like, small plant that rarely climbs somewhat epiphytically . The bare shoots are sparsely branched and densely leafed. Fresh shoots are more or less flexible, older shoots lignify easily. The leaves, which are spread out slightly upwards, have only short stalks. The thin, leathery leaf blades are elliptical to lanceolate-elliptical, 3.5 to 5 cm long and 1.3 to 2.2 cm wide. The apex is drawn out to a point, the base is rounded to wedge-shaped. The leaves are translucent. The midrib is clearly formed. About 6 short secondary ribs each branch off from the midrib. They are bare on the top and bottom. The vegetative parts secrete a white milky juice when injured.

The umbellate inflorescences have only a few flowers. The thread-like, bare flower stalks are about 2 cm long. The sepals are oblong-lanceolate, 0.2 cm long and end blunt. The edges are sparsely covered with cilia. The buds are pentagonal with pronounced ribs where the edges of the petals meet, the corolla measures about 1.7 cm in diameter. The white petals are half fused at the base. The tips are triangular-ovoid, the apices pointed. They are bare on the outside and fine papillae on the inside. The fleshy, egg-shaped corolla lobes are waxy white to greenish-yellow and spread out horizontally, about 4 mm long. The inner process is pointed and ascending, the outer process is very blunt. The anthers are no longer than the inner processes, the edges are membranous. The pollinia are club-shaped and long and narrow, somewhat truncated at the apex. The caudiculae are very short and start at the widest point of the corpusculum. The corpusculum is small and rhombic or dragon-shaped, the widest point is slightly above the middle. In the subspecies loheri , the pollinia are 680 µm long and 200 µm wide. The flowers stay open for about 10 days and have an intense scent of lime and honey. They secrete nectar that tastes sweet.

Similar species

Hoya odorata is similar to Hoya cembra Kloppenb. and Hoya paziae . All three species grow shrub-like rather than epiphytically climbing. It differs, however, by the broad, elliptical, smaller leaves: 3.5 to 5 cm long and 1.3 to 2.2 cm wide. vs. 8 to 10 cm and 2 to 3 cm wide (with Hoya cembra ). The leaves of Hoya paziae are significantly wider in relation to the length (6 to 7 cm long and 2.5 to 3 cm). The flowers are not fragrant. The pollinia of Hoya cembra are shorter in relation to the corpusculum or the corpusculum is much larger, and there are moderately long caudiculae.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The nominate subspecies occurs at Mount Mariveles in Bataan Province , Luzon Island , Philippines. It was collected there in a mountain rainforest at 1,300 m above sea level. The subspecies occur in other localities on the island of Luzon and on the island of Negros .

Taxonomy

The taxon was published by Rudolf Schlechter in 1906 . The holotype was collected by Elmer Merrill in January 1904. It is kept in the Herbarium of the Botanical Garden Berlin under the number # 5650 (# 3202 Jan. 1904). The Plants of the World online accepts the taxon as valid.

annotation

  1. The pollinaries of the individual subspecies differ z. T. considerably from the pollinarium of the nominal subspecies and the question arises whether the 6 subspecies really all belong to Hoya odorata . For example, the pollinarium of Hoya odorata subsp. garciai in the dimensions, proportions of the pollinia to the corpusculum, and the shape of the corpusculum more similar to Hoya cembra than to Hoya odorata .
