Hoya paziae is a plant of the genus of wax flowers ( Hoya ) of the subfamily of asclepiadoideae (Asclepiadoideae).

features

Hoya paziae is a terrestrial, shrub-like plant that also climbs somewhat less epiphytically . Fresh shoots are flexible, older shoots are rather stiff. The shoots are not very branched and have plenty of leaves. The internodes are about 4.5 cm long. The opposite, thin, leathery leaves are spread out-ascending with short petioles. The leaf stalks are 3 to 5 cm long and round in cross section. The leaf blades are elliptical, 6 to 7 cm long and 2.5 to 3 cm wide. The apex of the blade is drawn out like a beak, the base is rounded. They are bare on the top and bottom. The top is dark green and glossy, the bottom is a little lighter green. The leaf veins are only indistinct, apart from the very clear, rutted, slightly lighter central rib. There are approximately 5 or 6 secondary ribs starting from the central rib. The edges of the blade are slightly curled, as is the tip.

The umbel-shaped inflorescences arise from the leaf axils or outside and contain only 5 to 7 flowers. The peduncle is very short. The thread-like flower stalks are 1.5 to 2 cm long and glabrous. The sepals are narrow-elliptical and hairy on the outside. The wheel-shaped corolla is white and when spread measures 1.4 to 1.6 cm in diameter. The petals are about half fused. The narrow, triangular petal lobes are bald on the outside and hairy on the inside. The edges are bent over, as is the tip of the tip. The secondary crown is purple in color. The fleshy, elongated, ovate corolla lobes are spread out and slightly ascending. The inner process is drawn out narrow and briefly ascending. The outer process is broadly rounded with a hump ( umbo ) near the apex. The anthers do not protrude beyond the inner processes. The corners are rutted at the bottom, the sides have two longitudinal ridges. The pollinarium has long pollinia . In the subspecies montelbanensis they are 620 µm long and 210 µm wide with very wide, hyaline, outer margins that extend over the entire length. The caudiculae are very short, the pollinia start almost directly on the broad, triangular corpusculum. The corpusculum is 280 µm long and 175 µm wide, the blunt tip points downwards. The flowers are not fragrant.

Similar Art

The kind is close to Hoya odorata Schltr. and Hoya cembra Kloppenb. related. All species have a shrub-like habit rather than climbing. Hoya paziae differs from the other two species in that it has broader leaves (in relation to its length) and the pointed apices. The flowers of Hoya odorata also have an intense scent. The pollinarium of Hoya cembra differs significantly: the pollinia are significantly shorter in relation to the corpusculum and the corpusculum is significantly larger. The caudiculae are moderately long. The pollinia of Hoya odorata are also connected to the corpusculum by short caudiculae.

Geographical distribution and habitat

The species occurs at Mt. Halcon on the island of Mindoro , Philippines. Elmer D. Merrill found them there in a moss-rich mountain rainforest at 900 m above sea level. Other finds were made in Antique Province on Panay Island .

Taxonomy

The taxon was described in 1990 by Robert Dale Kloppenburg . Elmer D. Merrill found the holotype in November 1906 and gave the material to Rudolf Schlechter for publication, who wanted to name the taxon Hoya eugenioides , as noted on the herbarium sheet. However, it was never published. The holotype is kept in the herbarium of the Botanical Garden Berlin under the number # 5618. The Plants of the World online database accepts Hoya paziae as a valid taxon. Robert Dale Kloppenburg named the species after his wife Paz, whose name means peace.

The taxon is currently divided into two subspecies:

  • Hoya paziae subsp. paziae
  • Hoya paziae subsp. montelbanensis Kloppenburg (2019)
