Hubaldus from Pisa

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hubaldus from Pisa (also Hubaldinus ) (* unknown in Pisa ; † after 1252 ibid) was an archiepiscopal notary in Pisa in the first half of the 13th century.

Hubaldus was the son of a notary in Pisa, he calls him Rothus , but also Robulinus . His father died before 1228.

The first document signed by Hubaldus was issued on December 20, 1208. Between 1215 and 1220, his predecessor, the notary Silvester Filius Boni, changed to him; the year 1218 is conceivable on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Pisan Archbishop Vitalis . From 1220 Hubaldus gives the title publicus scriba curie Pisani archiepiscopatus .

In this capacity, he recorded and prepared numerous documents, not only for the archbishop's curia, but in at least eleven cases also for private individuals. He probably owned (at least temporarily) a chancellery , but mostly issued documents either in the curia itself or in the house of the client.

It is possible that he kept his office until 1252, in that year Archbishop Vitalis died, Fredericus Visconti succeeded him in the episcopal office, from November 1253 his successor in the office of notary, Rudolfinus filius Albertini, recorded .

Hubaldus left behind a book of imbreviations which was only discovered in March 1965 by Gero Dolezalek in the Pisa State Archives. It covers the period from May to August 1230 and is therefore the oldest Pisan notarial imbreviation book and one of the oldest imbreviation books at all.

The peculiarity of this Imbreviaturbuch is that, in addition to the usual tasks of an archbishop's court notary, it shows the entire wealth of legal matters that arose in a city like Pisa in the 13th century, including and in particular marital disputes, usury matters, inheritance disputes, acknowledgments of debt, guarantees, etc. It is therefore a rich source for research into civil law relationships prior to the adoption of Liber Extra 1234.
