Hans Thieme (born August 10, 1906 in Naunhof ; † October 3, 2000 in Freiburg im Breisgau ) was a German lawyer , legal historian and professor .

Live and act

Hans Thieme was born as the son of theologian Karl Thieme senior (1862–1932); his older brother was Karl Thieme . From 1916 he attended the Königin-Carola-Gymnasium in Leipzig , which he left in 1925 with the school leaving certificate. He then studied law at the Universities of Basel , Munich , Berlin and Leipzig . In 1929 Thieme received his doctorate in Leipzig under Franz Exner , and in 1931 he completed his habilitation at the University of Frankfurt am Main under Franz Beyerle . In May 1937 he joined the NSDAP . In 1938 he became a full professor at the University of Breslau and in 1940 professor at the University of Leipzig.

After serving as an officer from 1942 to 1945 , he was professor at the Georg-August University in Göttingen from 1946 . In 1953 he went to the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg as a full professor and was its rector from 1960 to 1961. He was awarded an honorary doctorate from the universities of Granada , Montpellier , Basel and Paris (Sorbonne) . In 1974 Thieme retired .

From 1954 to 1977 Thieme was co-editor of the magazine of the Savigny Foundation for Legal History (ZRG) . In 1976 the State Controller of the State of Israel ( en: Yitzhak Nebenzahl ) planted 70 trees in the Jerusalem Forest in his honor . He was also a member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences . In 1984 he was awarded the Baden-Württemberg Medal of Merit .
