The lift bridge in the Mecklenburg town of Schwaan in the Rostock district was a road bridge over the Warnow . Located on the east of the Old Town, former technical monument passed the provincial road 13. Because of dilapidation was Hubbrücke 2015 replaced by a fixed bridge construction. The steel lifting portals were dismantled in August 2009.

Building

The 33.8-meter-long, three-span bridge spanned the Warnow River, which is 30 meters wide here , with its 12.5-meter-long lifting section and the two reinforced concrete front bridges . The road surface on the approach bridges consisted of paving, the middle field was paved. Footpaths were arranged on both sides of the road. During the lifting operation, barriers installed on the approach bridges blocked the Warnow crossing. The lifting portals made of riveted steel frameworks arranged along the bridge were connected on the east side with a bridge girder over the roadway. The electric motor required to lift the deck girder was located on it. The power transmission to the lifting part took place via bevel gears , horizontal shafts and cable pulls with counterweights, which were located in the steel framework supports. The bridge fields and the steel framework rested on two concrete pillars . The carriageway could be raised by 2.40 meters, which resulted in a clearance height for ships and boats of five meters.

A wooden bascule bridge in the same place has been renewed several times over the centuries. If necessary, the wooden bridge was opened by a craftsman who lived near the bridge. Ships that wanted to pass the bridge reported this with an acoustic signal. The steel lift bridge was built in 1928. On May 1, 1945, one of the last days of the war, the bridge was blown up and the lifting section that was damaged in the process was replaced in 1950.

In 2008, discussions began about the demolition or renovation of the structure. The road construction authority in Güstrow had the load-bearing capacity checked and subsequently determined that the steel structure was dilapidated, deformations or tensions in the steel structure as a result of a truck accident in 2005 and a poor foundation . Even before a decision on further measures was taken, the need for a makeshift bridge next to the lift bridge, which will take traffic on Landesstraße 13 for the time of the construction work, was determined.

Six variants were discussed to remedy the deficiencies. A renovation of the bridge with costs of 6.7 to 9.7 million euros, a new construction of a movable bridge with the same silhouette, which according to the planning would have cost 6.3 million euros, were also up for discussion, as were the construction of a new fixed bridge structure . In July 2009 the Minister for Transport, Building and Regional Development rejected the decision on the renovation, for which a citizens' initiative was committed with a signature campaign. It was argued that the costs were too high and that with the amount of parts to be replaced (more than 60%) the bridge could no longer be viewed as a monument, but only as a replica. Funding for the preservation of monuments would therefore not have been made available. A fixed link was built at the site in 2015, which enables people to travel on the Warnow. The Ministry of Transport, Building and Regional Development has therefore opted for the financially cheapest option with costs of around 3.5 million euros, including the temporary bridge. The lifting portals of the old bridge were dismantled on August 19, 2009 and stored in the road maintenance depot in Kröpelin . For the time being, pedestrians could still cross the lift bridge. Vehicle traffic ran over the makeshift bridge. For the new bridge, the removal of the temporary bridge, the construction of a new temporary bridge for pedestrians and, from May 2014, extensive diversion of vehicle traffic became necessary.
