Life

Delange studied at the École Normale Supérieure (Agrégation 1935) and received his doctorate in analysis in 1939 with Paul Montel with a dissertation on the convergence of certain series of polynomials. During the occupation in World War II , he was a professor at the Faculté des Sciences in Clermont-Ferrand , where the French University of Strasbourg was exiled under German occupation . He was dean (doyen) there and was temporarily imprisoned. In Clermont-Ferrand he turned to analytical number theory, where he researched Tauber theorems and arithmetic functions. He published well into old age (2000). After the Second World War he was called to Paris.

In 1958, Delange founded the mathematics faculty and the university center in Orsay in general , initially to bridge the period when the University of Paris was rebuilt in the 1960s. The center in Orsay, where there was also an advanced computer center at the time, became practically independent around 1965 and around 1970 it became the University of Paris-South , where he was a professor until his retirement in 1982.

In 1959, with Charles Pisot and later Georges Poitou, he founded the Paris Seminar on Number Theory, known as DPP ( Seminaire Delange-Pisot-Poitou ), which was of particular importance to the development of number theory in France. The seminar took place regularly on Monday afternoons at the Institut Henri Poincaré . In 1995 it became the Seminaire de théorie des nombres de Jussieu . The seminar lectures of the DPP were also published in a separate series.
