Hubert Schmitz (born February 28, 1932 ) is a German school principal and union official.

Life

Schmitz attended elementary school in Trier from 1938 to 1946 . From 1953 to 1954 he was a student at the evening high school in Mainz . He then studied Greek and Latin with Walter Marg and Andreas Thierfelder . From 1961 to 1963 he completed his legal clerkship at the Rabanus-Maurus-Gymnasium in Mainz. From October 1, 1963 Schmitz taught at the Episcopal Evening High School Ketteler-Kolleg Mainz . From 1979 until his retirement in 1996 he headed the grammar school at the Electoral Palace in Mainz.

Schmitz was Deputy Chairman of the Association of Philologists from 1973 to 1985, and from 1985 to 1995 he was State Chairman. From 1975 to 1988 he was chairman of the main staff council for state teachers at grammar schools, colleges and study seminars for teaching at grammar schools. Schmitz was a member of the state management of the German Association of Officials Rhineland-Palatinate (DBB) for several election periods. In the 1990s, Schmitz was a member of the SWR Broadcasting Council.

A portrait in the Allgemeine Zeitung of February 28, 1992, on the occasion of his 60th birthday, attested Schmitz “his committed advocacy for the maintenance and strengthening of the grammar school within the framework of the structured school system”, for which he had already been awarded the Federal Cross of Merit in 1985. The Mainzer Rheinzeitung wrote on the same occasion: “At the moment, he is primarily concerned with the planned school reform. He vehemently takes an opposing position on radio and television. "

In 1995 he was appointed honorary chairman of the philologists' association.

effect

As chairman of the philologists' association and trade unionist, Schmitz fought against “the intention (...) to smash the tried and tested structured school system in Rhineland-Palatinate,” the shortening of the lesson table and the increased burden on teachers. This was served "for the first time in the history of Rhineland-Palatinate, jointly led struggle by students, parents and teachers against the downsizing of education". On January 29, 1993, Schmitz initiated a protest event in the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz, supported by around 3,000 grammar school and secondary school teachers, about which he wrote in the association's magazine Das Gymnasium : “The number of compulsory lessons for grammar school teachers was reduced from 24 to 23 in 1990 after 20 years was increased again on August 1, 1993, the credit hour was reduced from 1/2 to a third. Overtime also resulted from an increase in the average class size. In this context, our protest rally together with the Realschullehrerverband on January 29, 1993 in the Rheingoldhalle in Mainz was particularly impressive and effective for the public. Following this event, the philologists' association experienced a wave of solidarity. ”For Schmitz, the planned austerity measures were only the pretext to“ eliminate the structured school system and implement a single school system ”. The replacement of the previous Minister of Education Rose Götte by Jürgen Zöllner in the course of Kurt Beck's new cabinet formation on October 21, 1994 was welcomed by Schmitz in the hope that “Zöllner will take up his office with less sense of mission and ideological obsession due to his previous activities” and viewed as a "break free".

On August 28, 1985, Georg Gölter awarded him the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon for his dedication and services .
