Hubert Van Houtte

Hubert Van Houtte (born December 31, 1872 in Waregem , † October 12, 1948 in Gent ) was a Belgian historian and medievalist.

Van Houtte went to school in Tielt and studied at the University of Leuven, where he received his doctorate in history in 1896. He then studied in Leipzig with Karl Lamprecht in 1898 and in Berlin in 1902. From 1902 he taught history, particularly modern history and historical criticism. From 1912 he was a professor. In 1942 he retired.

He dealt with medieval history and the economic history of Belgium.

In 1932 he became a corresponding and in 1938 a full member of the Royal Belgian Academy . In 1919 he became a knight, in 1927 an officer and in 1939 commander of the Order of the Leopold . From 1931 he was a member of the Royal Belgian Historical Commission.
