Hubert de Blanck (born June 14, 1856 , according to other sources June 11, 1856 , in Utrecht , † November 28, 1932 in Havana ) was a Cuban pianist and composer of Dutch descent. He was the father of the Cuban composer and music teacher Olga de Blanck .

biography

Hubert de Blanck studied at the Conservatoire Royal de Musique de Liège and with Ferdinand Hiller at the Conservatory in Cologne. In 1873 he began his pianist career in Saint Petersburg . He was a professor at the College of Music in New York . In 1883 he settled in Havana. There he founded his own conservatory in 1885, which was officially called Conservatorio Nacional de Música . He was appointed president of the music department of the Academia Nacional de Artes y Letras in Havana, founded in 1910 . In 1918 he initiated the foundation of a Cuban symphony orchestra by the Pro-Arte Musical Society .

Works such as the operas Hiacona (1889), Los hijos de los peregrinos (1891), Patria (1899), Actea (1905) and La princesa morisca (1906), the Zarzuela Dólores (1916), the Suite sinfónica (1881) and Poema sinfónico (1894) for orchestra, the piano quintet from 1914, the paraphrase on the national anthem Himno Bayamé for piano (1897) and the oratorio Magdalena (1891) identify de Blanck as virtuosos and composers influenced by Romanticism.
