Partizan Island ( Russian Остров Партизан Ostrow Partisan , German ' Partisan Island ' ) is a 5 km long and hook-shaped island off the Ingrid Christensen coast of the East Antarctic Princess Elisabeth Land . In the Vestfold Mountains it is located in the middle of the entrance to the Langnes Fjord .
Norwegian cartographers mapped them using aerial photographs from the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . They named it as Onguløy (Norwegian for fish hook island ). Since this would have meant a risk of confusion with Ongul Island , Soviet scientists changed the name after measurements in 1956. The Advisory Committee on Antarctic Names transferred this in 1970 in a partial translation into English.
