The Ongul Island ( Japanese 西 オ ン グ ル 島 Nisi-Ongul Tô , German 'Western Ongul Island' ; English Ongul Island ) is an island off the Prince Harald coast of the East Antarctic Queen Maud Land . It is the largest island in the Flatvær group and is located on the east side of the entrance to Lützow-Holm-Bucht .
The island was mapped by Norwegian cartographers in 1946 after they had evaluated aerial photographs of the Lars Christensen expedition in 1936/37 . The name is owed to the fact that the cartographers at that time assumed a land connection between this island and the island known today as East Ongul Island, which gives it the appearance of a fish hook (Norwegian Ongul ). However, a Japanese Antarctic expedition discovered a strait between the island described here and East Ongul Island in 1957 .
