life and work

From 1965 Hubertus Günther studied art history, archeology and theater studies at the universities of Bonn and Munich . After completing his studies in 1973 with a dissertation on Bramante's Tempietto , Günther worked as an art expert for an auction house, took part in film productions for the Bavarian Broadcasting Corporation and led cultural trips to Greece several times a year. As a scholarship holder of the German Research Foundation and the Bibliotheca Hertziana in Rome, he was able to write his habilitation thesis on the study of ancient architecture in the drawings of the High Renaissance (publ. 1988). During the following time as head of the Art History Institute of the University of Düsseldorf (1984–1986) he achieved ensemble protection for the exemplary urban planning district of Düsseldorf-Oberkassel .

Günther has been a visiting professor for art history at the University of Frankfurt since 1986 , where he accepted the professorship for art history and for theater, film and television studies in 1988. From 1991 until his retirement in 2008 he was professor for modern art history at the University of Zurich . Since his retirement he has held seminars at the University of Munich and has been a member of the Consiglio Scientifico of the Centro internazionale di studi di architettura Andrea Palladio (CISA) since 2012.

Günther's publications focus on architecture and the study of antiquity in the Renaissance and Classicism. An essential topic for him is the question of how the revival of antiquity actually took place: in the study of ancient monuments and writings, in literary areas such as utopian approaches and shaped by specific national ideas.
