Hubertus coal (born June 6, 1959 in Düsseldorf ) is a German art historian .

Life

Coal studied art history, philosophy , Romance studies , history and urban studies in Bonn , Paris and Florence . In 1986 he received his doctorate on Denis Diderot's concept of art. From 1987 to 1992 coal was a research assistant and from 1993 to 1997 assistant at the Ruhr University in Bochum . In 1996 he completed his habilitation on Adolph Menzel's Friedrichbilder. From 1997 to 1999 he was a professor at the University of Cologne .

Since 2000 he has held the chair for Middle and Modern Art History at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich .

His work focuses on the visual arts of the 18th and 19th centuries up to Classical Modernism, especially in France and Germany, as well as media problems, theoretical history and digital art history. Coal is one of the first specialist representatives to address the importance of digitization for art history. He has been co-editor of the online review journal sehepunkte since 2001 .
