Hubertus Voss (1841-1914)

Hubertus Voß , also Hubert or Heinrich Hubert Voß (born October 25, 1841 in Borken , † March 3, 1914 in Osnabrück ), was a German Catholic clergyman. He was Bishop of Osnabrück from 1899 to 1914 .

Live and act

Hubertus Voß's theological studies took him to Münster and Bonn. He was ordained a priest on February 1, 1866. In Münster he first worked as a cathedral vicar and cathedral preacher. From 1885 to 1891 Voss was pastor at St. Dionysius in Rheine . In 1892 he was appointed Regens of the Münster seminary and cathedral chapter .

On April 12, 1899 he was appointed Bishop of Osnabrück. He was ordained bishop on June 19, 1899 . He kept the office until his death. His choice between the Prussian state and the Catholic Church in the empire was not without controversy.

The newspaper reports about his death confirm this and show that Voss had no friends until the end of his life, at least in important parts of the Wilhelmine press. This led to such discriminatory press releases as in the Berliner Tageblatt in its evening edition of March 3, 1914: “The Bishop of Osnabrück, Dr. Hubertus Voss, died this morning at 6:35 a.m. at the age of 73. Like the Archbishop of Breslau, Bishop Voss was also of little origin. "

The Vossische Zeitung announced in its evening edition of the same day: “This morning at 6:35 a.m. the Bishop of Osnabrück died of the effects of blood poisoning, which we reported recently suffered. Dr. Hubertus Voß had been Bishop of Osnabrück since 1899. During the time of his episcopate he did not come out in public in any particular way, and in recent struggles has mostly been passive. "

Voss was apostolic provicer of the Nordic Missions in Germany .

He supported a large number of new congregations, new churches as well as schools and youth homes.
