Johann Bernhard Höting (born July 18, 1821 in Epe ; † October 21, 1898 in Venice ) was Bishop of Osnabrück .

Life

Bernhard was born as the oldest of seven siblings in the Ahaus district. His father Johannes Höting was a carpenter and farmer. As a high school graduate at the Coesfelder Gymnasium , he studied philosophy and theology in Münster . On June 6, 1846, he was ordained a priest in the cathedral in Münster .

This was followed by a brief activity as a canon in Borken before he turned to school at the grammar school in Vreden . In 1850 he began classical studies in philosophy at the University in Berlin .

He returned home with an excellent state examination and a doctorate.

From 1854 he was a senior teacher at the grammar school in Recklinghausen and was elected director of the grammar school in Kempen two years later . In the same position he became director of the Carolinum grammar school in Osnabrück at the suggestion of the then Bishop Paulus Melchers . In 1867 he entered the episcopal administration as vicar general and cathedral capitular .

Pope Leo XIII. appointed Bernardus Höting on February 10, 1882 Bishop of Osnabrück. On May 3, 1882, the bishops of Hildesheim , Daniel Wilhelm Sommerwerck , and of Fulda , Georg von Kopp , donated his episcopal ordination . He tried to heal the gaping wounds that the Kulturkampf had inflicted and to clarify difficult legal issues of the city and diocese as well as the Nordic missions. His outstanding legal talent helped him in this.

He renewed the episcopal curia and that of the cathedral, took care of the new building of the seminary, and managed to expand what is now the Marienhospital and the Ursuline monastery . He founded what is popularly known as the “Monastery of Eternal Adoration” and had the Sacred Heart Church built.

On June 14, 1896, 3,000 torchbearers, accompanied by musicians and standard-bearers, marched to the cathedral courtyard and cheered Bishop Höting, who celebrated his golden jubilee as a priest on that day. The laudation was held by the respected businessman Middendorf, who emphasized that this rally in front of the cathedral was an "impressive sign of the unity between the Catholic people, the clergy, the bishop and the papal chair".

Despite poor health, he made his third pilgrimage to Rome . But he should never get there. He died in Venice on October 21, 1898. He found his final resting place in St. Peter's Cathedral in Osnabrück. He was buried there on October 26, 1898.
