The dome tomb of Huerta Montero (also called Uerta Montero or Monumento Funerario de Huerta Montero), discovered in 1988, is located in the industrial area in the northwest of Almendralejo south of Mérida in Extremadura in Spain . The facility from the Copper Age , which has been open to visitors since 2011, is protected by a hall.

Dome tombs occur in almost all of the Metal Age Mediterranean cultures, from the Levant to Provence ( Tholos de la Lauve ) to the Iberian Peninsula and northward near the Atlantic to the British Isles .

About 2600 BC The cupola tomb of Huerta Montero from the Copper Age is a round building with a more or less long dromos . The tholos is a false dome . The domes can extend from the floor, as in the Tholos do Barro and the dome tomb of Monge , or, as in Alcalar 3 and Huerta Montero, they start from a base made of stone slabs, which lines the lower wall sunk into the floor.

During the excavation, it was found that the dome tomb of Huerta Montero was intact. It had never been disturbed since it was sealed with a found plate thousands of years ago. For this reason, a variety of materials have been preserved. The peculiarity is that this chamber was deepened in Extremadura. There were no stone deposits in the Barros district, as in the vicinity of the Lácara dolmen . The chamber was deepened to absorb the vault pressure in the ground. For this, techniques were used that are not found in other places in the region.
