In 1921, after a year in Dumfries, he moved to FC Airdrieonians, with whom he won the Scottish Cup. In 1925 he moved to Newcastle United in England . He immediately became captain of the English, with the Magpies he became English champion. In 1930 he went south to Chelsea , where he stayed until 1935. After staying in London, he played at four different clubs for a year, which were Derby County , Notts County , Grimsby Town and AFC Gateshead . In total, the Scot scored 387 goals in 541 competitive games.

Gallacher's life came to a tragic end in 1957 when he committed suicide on train tracks in Gateshead . The next day he should have appeared in court for alleged abuse of his son.
