Hugo Bode

Hugo Bode (born July 26, 1851 in Groß Salze ; † January 14, 1937 ) was a German crop scientist.

Bode, son of a Protestant pastor, completed an apprenticeship as a farmer after attending grammar school and then worked in practice. From 1877 he studied agriculture at the University of Halle and received his doctorate in 1882 with Julius Kühn with a dissertation on fertilization problems with sugar beet . He then leased an estate near Würzburg , which he managed for twelve years. In 1895 he returned to the University of Halle and worked as a research assistant at Julius Kühn. In 1902 he completed his habilitation here on a business topic.

In 1905 Bode was appointed associate professor for agriculture at the University of Halle. Until his retirement in 1921, he managed an extraordinary position for soil science , fertilization and bacteriology . At the same time he headed the agricultural-physiological laboratory of the University's Agricultural Institute. In this position he dealt with chemical-physical investigations for the evaluation of arable soils. He also improved the methodology for determining the starch in potatoes . In addition to his work as a university lecturer, he was involved as a consultant in agricultural practice. He published two articles in the journal “Kühn-Archiv” that are noteworthy in terms of the history of science.
